I am Annamaria Sophia Kriska. I grew up in Mount Airy, North Carolina, a small southern town on the border of Virginia. My parents immigrated to the United States from Slovakia in 1994. Growing up, I split my time between my two homes: Mount Airy and Slovakia.
I have always been intrigued by my Slovak heritage and took the opportunity to learn about my history through my thesis. I pulled elements from my research and relationship with Slovakia combining it with not only my experiences with Slovakia but also my experiences with North Carolina and my family farm I grew up on. With these strong influences of tradition and nature, I also brought in details of familiar and contemporary garments, primarily those of workwear. The duality of life between Slovakia and North Carolina has shaped my design aesthetic as familiar, relatable, and unique.
